Children with disabilitiesIn October 1997 a General Discussion Day on children with disabilities was organized by the Committee monitoring the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The recommendations from this meeting pointed out the need for a strengthening of the information input concerning disabled children. Some of the international disability organizations agreed to form a special working group to serve this purpose. The Disability Awareness in Action (a London-based body) assumed the responsibility to co-ordinate the group. Sida (the Swedish International Development Agency) supports the working group on a three-year basis. Members on this group come from the major disability organizations but the group also includes one member of the Committe monitoring the Child Rights Convention. The Special Rapporteur serves as chairman of the group. One main activity within this project is to analyze government reports to the UN Committee from a disability perspective and to provide input to the Committee on the findings. The working group will also make a number of in-depth studies in some selected countries. |
